Responsibilities
Our Promise
It is vitally important to us to respect the planet and health of all who share it.
We aim to ensure our materials, processes and recycling activities leave the smallest possible ecological footprint. Shibori monitors the entire making process all the way downstream from the source of raw materials, to initial production, to life extension and all the way to disposal at the end of the product’s life.
Dyeing cloth
Our commitment to sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at Shibori. We use the exhaust dye bath method to hand-dye our textiles, a process that maximizes the use of dye and minimizes waste. In addition, we make every effort to use sustainable fabrics in our production whenever possible and are proud to have a zero-waste policy.
Workshops
Our workshops at Shibori focus on not only teaching the art of Shibori but also promoting sustainability in the textile industry. We use minimal materials and found objects, encouraging participants to upcycle old clothing and home wares. We even use offcuts to practice our techniques, reducing textile waste and promoting the reuse of materials. Our commitment to sustainability and creativity sets us apart and makes our workshops a must-attend event for anyone interested in textiles and sustainability. Contact us to learn more.
Leather
Our commitment to sustainability goes beyond just our leather sourcing practices. When dyeing our leather, we exhaust the dye bath, which means that no colour is left in the vat. This minimises the environmental impact and ensures that our process is as eco-friendly as possible. We are proud to offer leather that is not only beautiful and high quality but also ethical and sustainable.
Commercial fabrics
Shibori fabrics produced using the dye sublimation transfer method of printing which has several advantages over conventional wet printing. The design is printed in-house onto a transfer paper and then transferred by heat and pressure into the fabric (aka ‘dry dying.’)
This process uses virtually no water, there is no wasteful speculation, the designs reproduce with magazine-like quality and it gives the client infinite options.
Waste Management
Shibori is dedicated to minimising waste throughout our production process.
We achieve this by creating products on a made-to-order basis which ensures that we never overproduce. We also accept low minimum orders and ask our customers to return any unwanted samples to reduce waste and keep our production eco-friendly.
At Shibori, we believe in the importance of minimizing waste to create a sustainable future.
Community
Sustainability and community are at the heart of what we do at Shibori.
We believe that being eco-friendly and socially responsible should be an integral part of any business, which is why we donate our offcuts to local childcare centers and schools.
We also invite people to come and use our space to dye their own fabrics, fostering a sense of community and creativity. We are committed to doing our part to create a better world, one dye bath at a time.
