Shibori-Dyed Care Instructions

Fabric

Hand Wash Recommended:

For the longevity of Shibori-dyed fabrics, it’s best to hand wash in cool water. Use a mild, pH-neutral detergent to avoid colour fading. Gently agitate the fabric, but avoid wringing it out, as this can distort the fibres and design.

Machine Wash (if necessary):

If you must machine wash, use the delicate or gentle cycle, and always place the fabric in a mesh laundry bag to protect it from excessive agitation. Wash in cool water, and with similar colours.

Avoid Bleach and Harsh Detergents:

Harsh chemicals can cause the dyes to fade. Always use a mild detergent free of bleach or optical brighteners.

Air Dry:

Lay your Shibori-dyed fabric flat to dry in a shaded area, away from direct sunlight. Hanging the fabric can distort its shape, and prolonged sun exposure can cause the colours to fade.

Avoid Tumble Drying:

High heat from a tumble dryer can damage both the fibres and the dyed pattern. If you must use a dryer, choose the lowest heat setting and remove the item while it is still slightly damp to air dry further.

Avoid Direct Sunlight:

UV rays can break down dye molecules, causing colours to fade over time. Try to store your Shibori-dyed items in a shaded area when not in use, and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.

Wash Separately:

To prevent dye transfer or bleeding onto other fabrics, wash Shibori-dyed items separately for the first few washes.

Use Fabric Protector:

Consider applying a fabric protector spray that is safe for natural fibres. This can help maintain the vibrancy of the colours and create a barrier against dirt and stains.

Storage

Store in a Cool, Dry Place:

Keep your Shibori-dyed fabric in a cool, dry environment. Avoid storing items in areas that are prone to humidity, as this can affect the dye and cause mildew or mould.

Avoid Plastic Bags:

Never store fabric in plastic bags for extended periods, as this can trap moisture and encourage mildew growth. Instead, opt for breathable cotton bags or storage bins.

Shibori-Dyed Leather Care Instructions

Cleaning – Spot Clean Only:

Leather is sensitive to water, so avoid soaking it. Use a damp (not wet) cloth to gently wipe away any dirt or spills. If the leather has been stained, use a leather cleaner that is pH-balanced and designed for natural leather.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals:

Do not use cleaning products that contain solvents, oils, or waxes, as these can damage the finish and affect the dye. Instead, use a soft, slightly damp cloth or a microfiber cloth to clean the surface.

Regular Conditioning:

Leather can dry out over time, so it’s important to condition it to maintain flexibility and prevent cracking. Use a natural leather conditioner, applied sparingly. Be sure to test it on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure it does not alter the colour.

Avoid Excess Oil:

While leather requires conditioning, too much oil or cream can darken the colour of the Shibori dye. Use only a small amount, and ensure the conditioner is appropriate for dyed leather.

Limit Sun Exposure:

Just like fabric, leather is prone to fading in direct sunlight. Keep leather goods out of prolonged sun exposure to prevent the colours from fading.

Store Properly:

When not in use, store leather items in a cool, dry place. Avoid folding or cramming leather items into tight spaces as this can cause creases or cracks.

Avoid Moisture:

Leather is highly absorbent, and water can damage it, causing it to lose shape or stain. If the leather gets wet, gently blot it dry with a soft cloth and allow it to air dry naturally, away from direct heat sources like radiators or hairdryers.

Rotate and Use Sparingly:

If you have multiple leather items, rotating them can help prevent uneven wear and preserve their beauty.

General Storage Tip:

When storing leather products, it’s helpful to stuff them with tissue paper or a cotton bag to maintain their shape. Avoid using plastic covers, as these can cause leather to dry out and crack.
